Which herb is Legalon® made from?

The active ingredient of Legalon® MZ 80 is extracted from milk thistle (Silybum marianum).

What is Legalon® used for?

Legalon® is a clinically proven herbal medicine that is used to help patients maintain healthy liver function. Legalon® has been prescribed by health professionals in Europe for many years and has been used with great success by many millions of patients.

Before you use Legalon®

There are no known restrictions for adults taking Legalon®. There have been no adequate investigations of the use of Legalon® in children. It should, therefore, not be used in children under 12 years of age. There is no data available regarding the use of Legalon® during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Therefore, Legalon® should only be in these instances after consultation with your health care professional.

Taking other preparations

There are currently no known interactions between Legalon® and other medications.

How to take Legalon® capsules

Unless otherwise directed by your health care professional, Legalon® capsules should initially be taken one capsule three times a day. This may be reduced to one capsule twice a day as a maintenance dose. Your health care professional will decide how long treatment should be continued. If symptoms persist you should contact your health care professional.

Is it better to take Legalon® before or after meals?

Legalon® is a medicine of plant origin and is very well tolerated. You can therefore take Legalon® on an empty stomach. This has the advantage that the active agent, known as silymarin, is more quickly absorbed into the body and can act more rapidly and effectively. However should any gastrointestinal problems occur you can take Legalon® during or after meals.

Effects on ability to drive and use machines

Legalon® has no known adverse effects in these situations.

Side Effects

Legalon® is a medicine of plant origin. Medicines of plant origin are generally well tolerated and this is certainly true of Legalon®. It has been employed for the treatment of liver diseases for almost 30 years. In rare cases a mild laxative action has occasionally been observed.

Storage

Legalon® should not be used after the expiry date. Legalon® should be stored in a cool place that stays below 30C.
