Active Manuka Honey (or what is termed Total Activity in independent laboratory test certificates) contains naturally occurring antibacterial properties. “Active” honey contains all activity, mostly Hydrogen Peroxide activity.
Independent laboratory tests are undertaken on each batch of Active honey to measure Total Activity. Antibacterial activity of honey is evaluated by adding a diluted honey solution into a well of Agar seeded with certain bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). The clear zone, which shows that bacteria has failed to grow, is measured and compared with the clear zone of a corresponding bacteria seeded Agar well that has been treated with the antiseptic solution Phenol.
The result is expressed as the equivalent percentage of the Phenol solution. Hence an Active rating of 20 means that the honey has the same antiseptic quality as 20% of a standard Phenol solution.
How to take Manuka Honey
Off the spoon - This is the best way to take Manuka Honey as it allows you to get the maximum amount of Manuka Honey into your system without dilution.
On toast or cereal - Spread it on toast or add it to cereal and eat as normal.
Drink it - Use it as a sweetener in tea, coffee or flavoured tea – but not in boiling or hot water. Alternatively, dilute a teaspoonful in a little warm water (about a third of a mug/cup) and drink as normal either warm or cold.
Do not add Manuka Honey to boiling water as it will kill the natural active enzymes contained in the Honey. Always allow the hot water to cool first before adding the Manuka Honey.
